Rebecca B FRESH McDonald is a Hip Hop feminist and documentarian, photographer, journalist, videographer, visual artist, social justice advocate and community mover-and-shaker.
One of the top photographers and emerging journalists in the Twin Cities, B FRESH's work has been featured in The SOURCE, VIBE Magazine, Wax Poetics, The Nation, ColorLines Magazine, urb.com, The Liberator Magazine, IMPOSE Magazine, City Pages, and the Star Tribune, as well as in countless local artists media kits, websites and promotional materials. From hometown powerhouses Rhymesayers and Doomtree, to touring acts like KRS-ONE, Madonna, DJ Shadow and Saul Williams, to a horde of lesser-known artistsif youve played a show in the Twin Cities, B FRESH probably has your face on one of her hard drives somewhere.
On top of being the hardest-working photographer in town, B FRESH is also a committed social justice organizer. Her work with Intermedia Arts (B-Girl Be Festival), the Minnesota Womens Political Caucus, the Citizens League, the Sexual Violence Center and more has centered around building community, shining a light on womens strength and voices, and being an advocate for positive social and political change.
Her paper, All the Ladies in the House, Say Hoo! A Global Hip Hop Feminist Response, won the 2008 Best Paper in Womens Studies Award at the College of St. Catherine, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Armed with an insatiable curiosity and creative daring, inspiration from the activists who paved the way, and the understanding that photography is more than just pretty pictures, B FRESH seeks to highlight issues of race, gender and politics through her lens. She seeks to tell the stories of people who are too-often silenced, and to document strugglewhether that be the struggle of oppressed peoples building something out of nothing, the struggle of activists working toward a sustainable political and social movement, or simply the struggle of young artists trying to have their voices heard.
B FRESH is available as a session photographer, live show photographer, conference panelist, public speaker and all around freelance feminist rabble-rouser. She can be reached at rebecca@bfreshphotography.com
Cheryl Stinson is now part of the B FRESH team, taking photos, doing design (post processing) and thinking outside the frame. She is very open minded about shoots and new concepts and ideas. You can reach her at bfreshphotography@gmail.com.
